Benefits of Online Learning

There are many advantages to learning online, which is why so many people are choosing this option as a means to pursue higher education. At CLC, online classes deliver the same high-quality education and learning outcomes as face-to-face classes. While the online modality offers a lot of benefits, it requires a self-directed, proactive commitment to learning, as well as effective time management, organizational, and technology skills. While taking into account all of the necessary skills to be a successful online student, consider all the benefits!

Taking online classes means that you are in control of planning learning and study time around your life instead of having to plan your day around predetermined class schedules. This is one reason why online learning is a great option for students balancing work and/or family obligations.

Convenient Access

When you take an online class, you can access course content from anywhere. All you need is reliable Internet and a computer that meets CLC’s technical requirements to access class materials on the college’s learning management system, Canvas.

Preferred Learning Environment

The online format allows you to have more choice in when and where you study based on when you are most productive. Lectures and other course materials are accessed online, so you can read and complete assignments from the comfort of your own home or while out of town.

Improved Technical Skills

You will be expected to successfully navigate Canvas, create and share files, utilize electronic resources, and engage with your peers online – all of which will help you gain important computer skills and increase your confidence and fluency with technology, making you more equipped to trouble-shooting tech issues in the future.

Equal Participation

In the online mode, you have the opportunity to participate without worry of classmates who may speak up faster or be more extroverted than you in the face-to-face learning environment. You have the benefit of more time to process information and reflect before crafting your response in course discussions.

Avoid the Commute

You can save time and money, as well as avoid traffic, parking, and inclement weather, by not driving to campus. Instead you “attend class” by logging into Canvas to review lectures, read course materials, participate in discussion boards, and complete assignments. While all CLC campuses and services are open to online students and some online courses may have on-campus requirements, you can schedule visits around work, personal, and family commitments.

Career Potential

As a professional, you can expand your skills and knowledge without sacrificing time away from your job to travel to campus for classes – offering convenience while working. Taking advantage of career development opportunities, such as online classes, demonstrates to your supervisor and future employers that you are ambitious and committed to lifelong learning and continuous improvement.

Transfer Credit

Taking online classes is an excellent way to earn college credit that can be transferred to four-year institutions, especially if you are home for the summer or plan to travel. If courses fill up quickly at your university, contact a CLC advisor or counselor to determine transferability and enroll in an online class to stay on track with your degree requirements.
