Derrek Keesling

Teaching full time at CLC since: 2005; previously served as the automotive lab’s program assistant for two years.

Education: A.A.S., College of Lake County; B.S., Southern Illinois University; M.Ed., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; A.S.E. Certified Master Auto Technician.

Specialties: Automotive electricity and electronics, transmission and driveline systems, and engine performance.

Teaching full time at CLC since: 2005; previously served as the automotive lab’s program assistant for two years. He is an ASE Certified Master Automotive Technician and is a member of the Automotive Engine Re-builders Association, the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association and the Association for Educational Communications Technology.

Subjects taught at CLC: Introductory automotive technology, engine rebuilding, auto electrical, manual drive train and axles, powertrain systems, automotive service consulting, automatic transmission and transaxle, air conditioning and heating.

Main goal in teaching: I enjoy helping students in reaching their potential as well as modernizing the way in which they learn, by integrating new educational technologies into the classroom.

Teaching goals: I want to give students the knowledge, skills and hands-on experience that is needed to achieve their automotive goals. I make sure to be student centered and work with each student as an individual. I present course material with energy and passion, so my students can see how much I enjoy teaching automotive technology.

Teaching philosophy: My goal is to help students reach their full potential. Through a combination of classroom and shop activities, I strive to develop student’s mechanical and critical thinking – diagnostic skills to prepare them for a career in the automotive industry.
