Illinois Articulation Initiative: General Education Core Curriculum (IAI GECC)

CLC participates in the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) which is a statewide agreement between many Illinois colleges and universities designed to help Illinois college students transfer credit as easily as possible.

The IAI establishes a "package" of lower-division general education coursework accepted at all participating schools which is called the Illinois Articulation Initiative General Education Core Curriculum (IAI GECC).

  • Completion of the IAI GECC assures transferring students that lower-division general education requirements for a bachelor's degree have been satisfied at any participating institution. (Note: Some 4 year institutions have additional requirements for graduation and for admission to certain majors. Students are encouraged to consult a CLC academic success advisor for more information.)
  • Students who do not complete the IAI GECC before transferring need to complete the general education requirements of the transfer institution; completed CLC courses will be evaluated on a course by course basis.

Core Curriculum

The IAI GECC consists of 12 to 13 courses (37–41 semester credits) chosen from five different categories.

The GECC for CLC's Associate in Arts includes the required core for the IAI.  Students pursuing the Associate in Science (A.S.) degree may complete the IAI GECC upon transfer to an IAI participating institution or may select appropriate elective coursework within the A.S. to complete the IAI GECC at CLC. Guidance from a CLC academic success advisor is strongly recommended.

The five categories and the approved CLC courses in each category are shown below:
