What is CLEP?
CLEP (College Level Examination Program) is a nationally recognized credit-by-exam program offered by the College Board. By passing a CLEP exam, students have the opportunity to earn college credit at many colleges, including College of Lake County.
CLEP exams cover materials taught in five subject areas:
- Business
- Composition and Literature
- Foreign Languages
- History and Social Sciences
- Science and Mathematics

How Do I Earn College Credit with CLEP?
Each college/university has its own policy regarding which CLEP exams will be accepted for credit, as well as how much credit will be awarded for a CLEP exam.
Anyone may register to take a CLEP exam at the College of Lake County. However, CLC grants CLC course credit for CLEP exams only to students enrolled at CLC. Students hoping to transfer credit earned through CLEP to another school should check with the transfer school to determine its policy toward earning credit-by-exam before registering to take their CLEP exam at CLC.

Is There Anything Else I Need to Know About how CLC Handles CLEP Credit?
College of Lake County Board Policy states that earning credit-by exam is:
- Not to exceed a total of thirty (30) semester hours required toward the completion of an Associate degree
- Not to exceed one-half (1/2) of the semester hours required toward completion of a certificate
- Not to count toward satisfying fifteen (15) semester hours general residency requirement for the Associate degree
Please note: Earning credit-by-exam through CLEP has no effect on a student’s grade point average (GPA) at CLC.

How Much Does it Cost to take a CLEP Exam?.
- $90 per exam paid to College Board at the CLEP website, https://clep.collegeboard.org/.
- $23.50 per exam administration fee paid to CLC (non-refundable, non-transferrable); payments are made via RegisterBlast when scheduling your appointment.
Note: Fees and exam requirements are subject to change at the discretion of the College Board.
