Launching Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is a structured “Learn and Earn” program that combines job related classroom learning along with a structured on–the-job training guided by a mentor. These programs offer employers the opportunity to strengthen and build their workforce by developing a tailored high-quality talent pipeline. The goal for apprenticeship programs is to provide workers with a set of skills that meet the specific needs of local employers using a flexible learning approach.

Become an Apprentice

“In an apprenticeship, you learn a lot more than in an internship because you’re learning an entire career. A lot of the concepts in CLC’s machine tool trades program are similar to what I encounter on the job. And the idea that I have a job waiting for me is definitely comforting."

Harley PletzHarley Pletz is a first-year apprentice at JST Corporation in Waukegan. He is in the Machine Tool Trade program.

Harley participates in the Apprenticeship Program because it allows him to practice the skills he learns from CLC instructors and the job experience from professional journeymen on the job. This combination of class knowledge and real world employment makes education more "Rewarding... helps me understand the course work..." and do a "better job at work."
"As an apprentice it's like getting an education and work experience at the same time. I also appreciate getting a paycheck and benefits such as insurance and tuition. I am very grateful to the Career and Job Placement Center at CLC."

Congratulations and great job Harley!
We wish you continued success in your education and career path!
