COVID-19 Update for Students - June 5, 2020 Summer 2020 Grading Structure

Published Jun 05, 2020

We have received guidance from Illinois Community College Board (ICCB), Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) and Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) to extend the same grading structure in place for Spring 2020 to Summer 2020.

To help make the term more manageable and less worrisome, there are no Ds or Fs this term and are instead using P and N in their place. These changes give you the greatest flexibility in completing course requirements and achieving desired learning outcomes while keeping you on track with your academic plan.

This term, instructors will assign grades as follows:

The grades listed above will automatically be posted by your instructor this term. You can request a change from a letter grade (A, B, C) to a grade of P (Pass) after you complete the class (through September 30, 2020). You are encouraged to discuss a change from a letter grade (A, B, C) to P (Pass) with your academic advisor or student development counselor.

P grades will:

  • Meet graduation requirements. This includes ENG 121 and other similar courses. However, students in specific career programs may still need a C or better due to accreditation guidelines; those students should work closely with their instructors on guidance for their programs.
  • Be allowed to meet requirements to advance to the next level in a course sequence. However, students in specific career programs may still need a C or better due to accreditation guidelines; those students should work closely with their instructors on guidance for their programs.
  • Be transferable and earn credit as they were originally intended during the Summer 2020 semester and be applied toward major, minor, and General Education requirements. Colleges and universities nationwide are relaxing their requirements for incoming transfer coursework completed during the summer 2020 term and are accepting P grades. Final decisions on transferability are made at the receiving institution and it is recommended you consult with the Admissions department at your intended transfer institution.

Incomplete (I) grade: In addition to the grading modifications noted above, you may also have the option for an incomplete (or “I”) grade. Reach out to you instructor to discuss this option, which can give you 120 days or more to complete the class after it ends. Your instructor will list the requirements for successfully completing the course if you choose to take an “incomplete.”

Withdrawal (W) grade: Students also still have the option of withdrawing themselves from a class. Please review the Withdrawal Guidelines (PDF) document before doing so.
