When I moved from Ukraine to the U.S.A. (Waukegan) in 2014, at age 70, I was afraid because I couldn’t speak a word of English. But I was excited to be closer to the rest of my family.

Two months after moving here, I enrolled in an English as a Second Language class at CLC. I immediately encountered wonderful professors who were helpful, professional and very well organized. At the beginning of each session, they explained the teaching goals and how they planned to accomplish each goal. This is very important to help us students prepare to learn the new information. Our homework included building a portfolio of several written class papers. Each professor created a friendly atmosphere in which we students weren’t afraid to ask questions.

As someone who has taught for a long time, I can see that CLC professors have a true love of teaching. I am sure that they represent the high level of American education and culture!

After Summer Session 2016, I felt great satisfaction after passing both the math and English portions of the Academic Professional Test. I scored very high on the math exam, and passing the English test made me qualified to take the next level of CLC’s English Language Instruction (designed for ESL students who want to learn English quickly for academic or personal reasons). Since then, I have completed two more English Language Instruction courses, including the highest-level ELI 110 course, for which I received an A grade. After the 2017 Fall Semester ended, I was thrilled to be named to the college Honor List for earning at least a 3.0 GPA. I am so happy and thankful to God, the atmosphere at CLC and America for the excellent education!

Besides classroom-based instruction, I have used CLC’s language lab, where I can study English online and have access to an English-language tutor. The encouragement, along with the one-on-one communication with the English tutors, has helped me stay focused.

In addition to academics, the other services at CLC are wonderful. I’m grateful to CLC for the Women’s Center staff, who have been very positive and have helped me enroll in classes and buy books.

My goal is to improve my English by taking English courses and continue living in the U.S. The CLC campus environment offers friendly, quiet and polite surroundings that encourage me. My life as a CLC student is nice. Thank you, my dear CLC!
