Morning Ceremony

  • 9 a.m. - Graduates check in and line up
  • 10 a.m. - Ceremony begins

Afternoon Ceremony
Associate in Applied Science Degrees, A.G.S. Degrees and Certificates

  • 1 p.m. - Graduates check in and line up
  • 2 p.m. - Ceremony begins

Each ceremony is approximately two hours long. Graduates should make sure they arrive at the check-in and line-up time listed above. The procession line up begins approximately 20 minutes prior to the scheduled ceremony start time. Graduates who arrive after the procession line up begins will not be guaranteed participation.

*Students should submit a Petition to Graduate by the Spring petition deadline of February 15. This includes students planning to graduate Summer Term. Summer graduates can petition after this deadline, but will have less time to register and may have late registration fees. All students must petition prior to the Final Deadline to register. Students can complete their petition online at

Students must submit a Petition to Graduate to participate in the ceremony. Students who received auto-awarded degrees and certificates are not eligible to participate.

Students must have earned CLC college credit in order to participate in the commencement ceremony. In progress courses may be used as earned credit provided they are for the Spring Semester immediately preceding the ceremony. Transfer credit, credit for prior learning and courses from semesters following the ceremony may not be used towards this requirement.

**Students who register late will receive a bulk order gown. Bulk order gowns are provided on a first-come first-served basis. Sizes and availability are not guaranteed. Alterations may be necessary, and are the student’s responsibility.

***Students who do not register for commencement AND complete their regalia (Cap, Gown and Tassel) order by the final deadline will not be eligible to participate in the ceremony.

Steps to Participate

  1. Register in the course GRAD 999 – Commencement Registration. There are 2 sections – one for the morning ceremony (for Transfer Associate Degrees) and one for the afternoon ceremony (for Associate in Applied Science Degrees and Career Certificates). Students should enroll in the section they are eligible for, based on their program of study. For information about how to register in courses visit

  2. Check your student email for instructions about how to complete your registration. Instructions will be sent within 24 hours after enrolling in GRAD 999. Follow the steps in the email and complete your registration. Registration confirmation will be sent to your student email within 24 hours of completing the registration steps.

  3. Pay the commencement fee. Payment can be made online in myStudentCenter or in person at one of our campuses. Failure to pay the commencement fee will result in a hold on your account. You will not be allowed to enroll or order official transcripts until this debt is cleared.

    Financial Aid (including student loans) will NOT cover the commencement fee. Financial Aid students are responsible for paying the commencement fee. Illinois Veteran Scholarship recipients should contact Veteran Student Services, Grayslake Campus Room B113b for a voucher and next steps.

  4. Pick up your regalia (cap, gown and tassel). Details about regalia pick-up, including times and location, will be sent to your student email. Make sure to check your student email often for updates.

    Regalia will only be given to the student. If someone else will be picking up your regalia, you must provide the Office of Registrar and Records a written request prior to pick up.

  5. Celebrate! Participate in the Commencement Ceremony. A reception will be held immediately after the ceremony for graduates, faculty and guests. Refreshments will be provided in the tent located in Parking Lot 1, across from the P.E. Center.


  • $25 - This includes your cap, gown, tassel and diploma cover for the commencement ceremony
  • $10 - Late fee added to orders submitted after open registration deadline

The ceremony is open to the public and there is no charge for guests to attend. Seating is available on a first-come basis. There are no tickets required.

Regalia (Caps, Gowns and Tassels)

All students participating in the commencement ceremony will be required to wear the academic regalia significant to their program of study. Students will receive one cap, one gown and one tassel. Students who are earning multiple degrees or certificates must choose one program of study for participation.

You will be contacted for your height and weight measurements after you register for commencement. Caps are one-size-fits-all up to size 7½. Caps, gowns and tassels are yours to keep following the ceremony.

  • Commencement regalia will be worn by all graduates and may not be altered, modified or decorated in any way.
  • College issued Commencement Honors cords and Veterans cords may be worn at the ceremony.
  • Multiple tassels during the ceremony are not allowed.
  • Non-program tassels, including Phi Theta Kappa tassels, and unapproved adornments and stoles are not permitted.
  • Gowns cannot be re-used from other schools or years due to differences in dye lots.

Caps and gowns must be picked up on Wednesday, May 9 or Thursday, May 10.  Please check your CLC email for pick-up location, times and directions. Students who do not pick up their regalia may not be able to participate in the ceremony.


Diploma covers will be handed to graduates as part of the commencement ceremony. Each student will be given one diploma cover. Actual diplomas will be mailed to the student after the degree/certificate has been conferred. Diploma processing can take three to four weeks. Students should verify their address on file is current.

Commencement Honors

To be recognized for honors, students must have completed 30 credits at CLC by the end of the 2017 Fall Semester with a cumulative GPA of:

Honors GPA
Honors: 3.00 - 3.49
High Honors: 3.50 - 3.74
Highest Honors: 3.75 - 4.00

The Office of Registrar and Records compiles the Commencement Honors list as part of the commencement program.

Ceremony Guidelines

  • Balloons are not permitted in the Physical Education Center. Please leave balloons in your vehicle. CLC staff will not be responsible for lost or stolen balloons.
  • Graduates should wear comfortable shoes to assist with ease of crossing the stage and managing stairs, as well as standing for a long period of time. Stiletto shoes are strongly discouraged to reduce Physical Education Center floor damage.
  • Graduates should leave all personal belongings with family members or guests. There are no provisions in the check-in area for coats, handbags or other valuable personal items.
  • Please silence your cell phones during the ceremony.
  • Children must be supervised at all times.
  • Guests, including children, are not allowed in the check-in area and cannot sit or walk with graduates.
  • CLC is proud to be a smoke-free campus.

Graduates are responsible for ensuring their guests follow the ceremony guidelines.


The event is wheelchair accessible. The ceremony will be captioned and Sign Language Interpreters will be provided. For other assistance, please contact the Office of Students with Disabilities so that necessary arrangements may be made.


Central Valley Studios will be photographing every student as you cross the stage at the ceremony, at no obligation. Go to to enter emails and addresses of your family and friends who would like to see and order your photos.  After graduation, order online at or call Central Valley Studios, at (877) 446-2196.

There will be photography areas located in the gymnasium for guests to take pictures during the ceremony. Please use these areas to prevent blocking other guests’ view of the stage. As a courtesy to others, guests are asked to exit the building after the ceremony so everyone is able to leave. Photographs can be taken outside and in the reception tent.

Late Petitions

Students who submit their Petition to Graduate after the deadline and wish to participate in the commencement ceremony will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. Students must submit a written letter of appeal to the Office of Registrar and Records for consideration. Approval of appeals is based on timing, capacity and resources. Decisions will be sent via email after the registration deadline. Please note that we cannot guarantee approval for these requests.
