Accessible education for everyone is important at College of Lake County (CLC), an open-access institution. More educational opportunities will be available this fall to adults with mild and moderate disabilities with the launch of Lancer Explore Institute (LEI), a rebranding and expansion of the long-standing Personal Success Program.

The program expansion meets a critical community need in ensuring everyone feels included in higher education. Nearly 80 students participated in the program in the last year. By offering a highly supportive setting in the college environment, LEI provides access to students who might not otherwise pursue post-secondary education.

“My son enjoyed the opportunity to connect with students who shared his interests, and he has built upon the skills he developed in this program to transition to other courses that CLC offers for college credit,” said Daniel Graham Jr., the parent of a former student. “LEI provides variety and flexibility in the classes it offers, both online and in classroom settings, and opens doors to the college experience. It is a terrific, cost-effective program that serves its students well, and I am proud my son was a part of it.”

While the program previously focused on vocational skill development, LEI presents more diverse opportunities for work readiness, social-emotional growth and social interaction. New programming through LEI includes topics that provide students with the tools they need for independence and relationship-building, such as money management, problem solving, healthy life skills and more.

“I took a cooking class this summer through the Lancer Explore Institute program and I loved it!” said LEI student John K. “We made tasty recipes. I learned about food safety and nutrition. I met new friends and had a lot of fun. I’ve already signed up for another class. I like being a part of a college experience and look forward to taking more classes.”

LEI is managed by Senior Program Coordinator Tiffany Nelson, whose passion and lived experience drive her to lead this mission, ensuring all members of our community have access to the resources and support they need to lead fulfilling and productive lives. Through the program expansion, she is excited to promote the significance of acknowledging, understanding and celebrating individual differences.

“As a person with a disability, I understand the importance of personal and professional growth, as well as feeling a sense of belonging. It is crucial to human well-being and development,” Nelson said. “Building self-esteem, improving emotional health and promoting resilience are elements that I had to work on for my own growth. I am proud to support our students on their personal journeys.”
