Discover the spirit of Latinx Heritage
Published August 27, 2024The community is invited to celebrate a vibrant tribute to the powerful contributions of the Latinx community during Latinx Heritage Month across all College of Lake County (CLC) campuses. This year’s theme is “In Unity: Seguimos Prosperando/We Continue to Thrive.”
The celebration includes an array of fun activities, performances, engaging workshops and heartfelt dialogues that highlight the resilience, creativity and spirit of Latinx culture. Most events are free to attend.
- Navegando en un mundo monolingüe con un lente multilingüe: la visión de un estudiante adulto a nivel universitario, 6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 17, Room A011 at Grayslake Campus
This session will feature a group of multilingual, CLC adult learners in the Early Childhood Education program who will share their views on opportunities at CLC, language challenges and stories about how their families have supported them in meeting their goals. This event will be entirely in Spanish.
- Ballet Folklorico Tayahua, 12 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 19, room V138 Atrium at Southlake Campus
Join us in Vernon Hills for a performance from Ballet Folklorico Tayahua celebrating the rich diversity of Mexican and Mexican-American cultural heritage through dance and music.
- Fiesta Sin Frontera, Sept. 21, Waukegan
Join platinum sponsor CLC in celebrating traditional Mexican culture and Mexican Independence at Fiesta Sin Frontera. This free, family friendly event features exciting performances by artists, dancers and bands. Enjoy eating and shopping at local restaurants and shops. Make sure to stop by the CLC booth to pick up your special “Somos CLC” pin.
- La Sonora Mazuren & La Muchacha, 7 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 22, in JLC Studio Theatre at Grayslake Campus
This party features two fantastic Latinx artists from South America. Preeminent protest music icon, singer/songwriter Isabel Ramírez and her group La Muchacha, rose to stardom for her songs calling for peace in her native Colombia. La Sonora Mazuren performs an eclectic variety of alternative tropical music, creating a psychedelic musical feast. - Día de los Muertos Art Workshop, 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 25, room N015 at Lakeshore Campus

- Latinx Community Resource Fair, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 2, Student Commons at Grayslake Campus
Student and community organizations will share and provide resources.
- Carrera de los Lancers 5K Fundraiser, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, at Grayslake Campus
Join our Carrera de los Lancers 5K run to support the Alicia Hernandez Scholarship. Participate for a great cause and help more students achieve their educational dreams. Experience a vibrant showcase of art, a traditional ofrenda and live performances as part of the ArtWauk celebration. This event highlights the intersection of art and culture in a community setting.
