Complete the FAFSA

Apply as early as possible, after October 1st, for the upcoming academic year to ensure that all federal, state and institutional deadlines are met. The College of Lake County's Federal School Code is 007694.
Complete the FAFSA
You will need to create an FSA ID to submit and update your FAFSA. You can use this ID to access other U.S. Department of Education (ED) sites as well.

After you submit your FAFSA, the Department of Education will send you a Student Aid Report (SAR). The SAR confirms the information reported on your FAFSA and explains your Expected Family Contribution (EFC).
The EFC is an index of need that our office uses to determine the amount of federal student aid for which you qualify. The ED will also send our office an electronic copy of your SAR called an Institutional Student Information Record.
If we need more information from you, we will contact you by mail or email. Keep your address current with the Student Records Office and check your “To Do List” in myStudentCenter often for any updates.
You can access financial aid information, holds and checklists for financial aid processes via Student Center. After a review of your SAR, we will prepare a letter outlining your aid eligibility.
You no longer must register with Selective Service to be eligible to receive federal student aid. Transgender students are encouraged to complete the FAFSA.

Bring these items to the workshop so our financial aid specialists can help you complete your application:
- For FAFSA completion, please have your Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID and password, as well as the FSA ID for any of your contributors.
- Your Social Security number if you have not created an FSA ID. It is essential to enter this number correctly on the FAFSA form!
- Your driver’s license number, if you have one.
- 2023 federal tax information, tax documents, or tax returns, including IRS W-2 information, for you (and your spouse, if you are married) and for your parents if you are a dependent student.
- Records of child support received (if applicable).
- Current balances of cash, savings and checking accounts.
- Net worth of investments, businesses and farms.

Special circumstances appeal

If there is a significant change in your financial situation, or if your FAFSA does not capture a financial difficulty that you are currently facing, you can appeal your FAFSA by submitting a special circumstance appeal (PDF). To pursue this appeal, you must have filed the FAFSA for the current year.

An example of a special circumstance includes a noticeable reduction in income due to job loss, reduction in work hours or high unreimbursed medical costs. The appeal could change your Adjusted Gross Income on the FAFSA and may qualify you for federal or state financial aid.
