Fire Science Technology

Show up with a scientific mindset

In the moment, in all the gear, firefighters do what needs to be done based on several diverse types of calls. You protect lives, property and communities.

Yet firefighting begins before any alarm sounds and continues long after the trucks are parked. It is a technical science—how energy becomes fire, how varied materials respond to heat, how humans can create safer conditions.

Bring your curiosity about the physical world, your interest in people and your drive to be on the team that shows up. We’ll equip you with the science and the technical skills so you can fight fires before, during and after the smoke.

Why study Fire Science Technology with us?

We work closely with the Office of the State Fire Marshal to make sure our fire science courses align with their requirements for:

  • Instructor I & II
  • Fire Basic Operations
  • Company & Advanced Fire Officer
  • Apparatus Engineer
  • Hazmat First Responder

The State Fire Marshal’s Office certifies students in Fire basic Operation (FBO). This certification allows students to take final exams at CLC via Pearson Vue to meet the state certification testing requirement.

Your experienced instructors know you by name—not by number. At CLC, the instructors are teachers first, researchers second. They dedicate their careers to helping you learn and understand the significance of this life-saving profession.

“While I was in the Coast Guard, I’d take a class here or there online with other colleges. None of them hold a candle to CLC. It’s unbelievable how far the college is looking forward and how many opportunities are available for the people of Lake County.”

Joshua studied Fire Science Technology at CLC after serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. He now works as a firefighter and is studying Emergency Medical Technology to also become a paramedic.
