About the Program
The humanities are a group of academic disciplines (art, dance, film, theater, music, philosophy, literature, languages, and religion) that critically and creatively explore the fundamental question of human existence: What kind of life is a happy, good and fulfilling life in which humans can thrive? Humanities courses teach students how humans across the world, from past to present, have answered this fundamental question through artistic and cultural expression. With those past and present role models, students can define happiness, goodness, and fulfillment in their own current lives and imagine a vision for their futures.
Humanities is a transfer program housed in the Communication Arts, Humanities and Fine Arts division. Transfer programs are for students who plan to continue their education at a four-year college or university to earn a bachelor’s degree. Some students take humanities courses to fulfill the humanities and fine arts requirement for a transfer degree, others take humanities courses as part of a plan to major in humanities. Many students also take humanities courses as electives.
