What should I expect from college?
Helpful insights for first-generation and new college students
As a new college student, you should expect many things from your school to help you succeed. This is true no matter your age or where you are in life.
For first-generation students, not knowing what to expect from college is especially stressful. As the first person in your family to attend college, you may not have someone who can answer your college questions.
In this case, it helps to choose a college like College of Lake County (CLC). Nearly 49% of students who attended CLC during the 2024 school year were first-generation students1. We understand your concerns and support you with:
1. Personal attention and feedback.
The average class size at CLC is small – about 15 students. Instructors know you by name. They provide feedback and support to help you achieve. You’ll learn the same material as you would at a big school but pay less for it. You won’t be one of the hundreds of students in a class taught by a teaching assistant.
2. Support for every step of your journey through graduation.
Your College and Career Navigator gets you onboarded and answers your college questions. Then your dedicated Academic Success Advisor (ASA) takes over. Your ASA helps you stay on track to meet your college goals and connects you with resources. CLC provides support for your academic journey and personal well-being.
3. Help paying for college.
