This summer, College of Lake County (CLC) is expanding its community education offerings with a dynamic lineup of classes designed to meet the evolving needs and interests of Lake County residents—now offered in Spanish.

In addition to the many classes taught in English, the new courses in Spanish mark the first time CLC has launched noncredit programming specifically for Spanish-speaking learners. This initiative reflects the college’s commitment to accessibility, inclusion and community responsiveness.

“We are very excited to introduce the Community Education En Español program,” said Senior Program Coordinator Arelys Flores Rodriguez. “By developing courses that reduce language barriers and better reflect local demographics, we can make a significant impact on families in our community.”

As a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, CLC is uniquely positioned to support the region’s increasingly diverse population. Approximately 25% of residents in Lake County identify as Hispanic or Latino, well above Illinois’ overall share of 18.8% (source: U.S. Census Bureau). Additionally, Lake County ranks fourth out of 102 counties statewide in Hispanic population share, highlighting the importance of culturally relevant educational opportunities.

This program aims to meet learners where they are—whether building new skills, exploring personal interests or supporting their families. Offerings will span topics such as entrepreneurship, arts and crafts, personal care, computer skills, personal finance and bilingual literacy.

“Building trust and strengthening connections within our Hispanic communities is central to our work,” said Flores Rodriguez. “We’re here to listen and continue creating community-informed classes that bring people together and help them achieve their goals.”

Programs for all ages and interests

Beyond the new Spanish-language courses, CLC’s summer community education schedule includes:

  • Summer camps for middle schoolers, high school students and neurodivergent learners
  • Adult enrichment classes in creative arts, home maintenance, wellness, languages and discussion-based topics
  • Family-friendly experiences that invite students 14 years and older to learn solo or alongside an adult family member
  • Career training programs in areas such as real estate, healthcare and project management

Together, these offerings provide flexible, short-term options for learners at every stage of life.

“Education is for everyone, no matter your age, background or goals,” said Kara Cunny, acting manager of community education. “We’re passionate about putting the ‘community’ in community college by creating opportunities for people to build skills, explore interests and discover new possibilities.”
