Study Abroad: Costa Rica

Environmental biology in Costa Rica

May 16 – 25, 2027

Unparalleled biodiversity and commitment to environmental preservation make Costa Rica an essential destination to study biology and ecology. Engage with local researchers and protect habitats to better understand the delicate balance between human activity and the natural world. Participate in academic and field experiences that highlight the country’s status as a global leader in environmental stewardship and biological research.

Program highlights include visits to the University of Costa Rica’s marine biodiversity museum, the Arenal Hanging Bridges to observe canopy life, and the Bribri indigenous community to learn about traditional multi-crop farming and ancestral chocolate production.

The trip features one course for three credits total:

  • BIO 120 – Environmental Biology (4 credit hours)

Explore relationships between humans and the environment. Topics include ecology, population biology, modification of the environment, resource use, land use planning, pollution and energy. The goal is to better understand biological and social issues caused by use and misuse of the environment.

The course starts the week of January 19 and culminates in the trip.
