You know better: it’s a shift in how the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R) plant for the home or business operates. Electrical wiring, thermodynamics and mechanical processes all work together to heat and cool our spaces.

Earning an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) means you learn it all: how to install, test, troubleshoot, maintain and repair furnaces, air conditioners, and the reach-in or walk-in refrigerators used by supermarkets, restaurants and stores. You also take college classes to round out your general education—classes in math, science, history and English. You’ll use those classes throughout your career as you talk with customers and coworkers and as you take on more responsibility as a supervisor or service lead.

An A.A.S. in HVAC/R Engineering Technology takes two years. You learn:
- principals of HVAC/R
- working with refrigerants
- electricity skills
- prep for EPA 608 Certification
- general life and career skills including math, English, Speech, History and Science
In the labs, you turn your notes on theories (thermodynamics, electrical capacity, etc.) into real-world knowledge. Every class starts with a talk on the theories. Then, right away, you test those theories and abstract ideas on a project in the lab. The “how” and the “why” come together so you can master HVAC/R systems.
Classes engage your brain, your hands and your muscle memory. You learn the theories and ideas first, then apply them in labs and team projects. In this way, you build confidence in your solutions and in your ability to do the work.

When your first boss tests to see if you know how to do the work on a residential HVAC/R system, you bring everything you learned in lectures and labs to show you know the how and why.
Most of your classmates (but not all) have been out of high school for a while. Some may be working, some may be changing careers and others are just starting out. In group projects and with the guidance of your instructors, you learn how to work with others on HVAC/R puzzles, just as you will on the job.
Not your HVAC/R courses—the hands-on labs are essential. In-person classes keep your program on track. You also learn to interact in person with faculty and peers.
